PUMP UP THE BASS.

Obviously I said yes.

But the first thing I had to do was save my pennies and buy an instrument. Sue and I went to a guitar store on St. Mark's and looked around.

Everything was way out of my league. I just don't have $900 to spend on a bass. The cheapest one was $499.

"Forget it," I said. "I don't have the money".





"We have an equipment allowance from the label, " Sue said. "I'll buy it for you".

That changed things. We found a nice fender Precision and Sue payed the man in cash. "This was my own bass," the guitar store guy said. "I toured with Patti Smith for a while in the 80's and this was the axe I used."

I left the store the proud co-owner of a piece of musical history."
