T O M O R R O W
22 June thru 29 July 2000

Opening Reception: Thursday 29 June from 6 to 9pm.

RSUB is proud to present TOMORROW, a group show curated by Andréa Salerno and Mari Spirito, at RARE, 435 West 14 Street, featuring Candice Breitz, Beth Campbell, Katharine Finneran, ium, Tony Matelli, Ryan McGinness, Michael Phelan and Guy Richards Smit.

In the realm of ‘tomorrow’ advancements in science and technology promise ease and efficiency. Capitalism and the desire for an improved lifestyle (made fashionable by the American Dream) has reached all corners of the earth. And since capitalism dictates that there is always more to gain, we constantly push ahead. One can always do more-tomorrow. Tomorrow will be a brighter day. Tomorrow becomes the product.

The eight young artists in TOMORROW investigate the polar and sometimes overlapping apocalyptic and utopian possibilities of our perceptions of another day through video, painting, drawing and sculpture. Fish tanks, rock icons, toy soldiers and media-gear are vehicles for perversion, nostalgia and unrequited love. By offering a range of considerations with a unifying thread of black humor, the exhibiting artists show us why hope is false and optimism is antidotal. "What's going to happen to us?" is not an obsessive occupation of the mind but a genuine sense of uncertainty that lingers in the peripheral vision of contemporary culture.

In the future someone may say "What kind of house plant is that?" and you might respond, "That's not a house plant, that's my new iMac!"

Candice Breitz, ium and Tony Matelli have exhibited internationally in venues such as the International Istanbul Biennial; the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul, Korea; and Torch Gallery in Amsterdam, respectively. Beth Campbell, Katharine Finneran, Ryan McGinness, Michael Phelan and Guy Richards Smit have had shows in New York at PS1 Contemporary Art Center, Gale Gates Gallery, Whitney Museum of American Art at Champion, Andrew Kreps Gallery and Roebling Hall.
